Why your Chinese prospect has stopped replying

Silence after a good meeting is the most common and most misread signal in France–China business. It usually means something specific.

France → China

European sellers read silence as loss of interest and either give up or push. Both are usually wrong. The decision has moved somewhere you cannot see, and your job is to make it easy to carry there.

What is usually happening

  • The person you met is not the decision-maker, and is now presenting you internally — with whatever material you gave them.
  • Someone is verifying that your company is real. This takes time and happens without you.
  • They are waiting for a reason to bring it up again — a new product, a price, a visit, anything that creates an occasion.
  • The answer is no, and a direct refusal is being avoided as a courtesy.

What actually helps

  1. Give them something to forward. A one-page document in Chinese that survives being sent to someone who never met you.
  2. Create the occasion yourself. « I will be in Shenzhen on these dates » reopens conversations that a follow-up email will not.
  3. Make verification easy. Company registration, a real address, a reachable contact — visible without having to ask you for them.

Pushing for a yes or a no rarely produces either. Removing the obstacles to someone else saying yes on your behalf usually does.
