Buyers who know Shenzhen assume it is the answer to everything. It is the answer to electronics and to anything with a circuit in it. For general merchandise — the vast category of small manufactured goods that fills a retail shelf — the centre of gravity is Yiwu, in Zhejiang, roughly a thousand kilometres north.
What it actually is
A permanent exhibition of a scale that does not translate well into description: districts organised by category, each holding thousands of booths, each booth a trading window onto one or several factories in the surrounding region. You do not walk it in a day. You do not walk a single district in a day either.
The trap for electronics buyers
Almost every booth is a trading operation, not a factory. In Shenzhen that distinction matters enormously and buyers are trained to hunt for the factory behind the trader. In Yiwu the trading layer is the point: it aggregates hundreds of small workshops that could never serve an export customer directly, handles consolidation, and manages the paperwork. Trying to go around it usually means dealing with a workshop that cannot invoice for export.
So the question changes. Not “are you the factory” but “who makes this, how far away, and can I see it”. A good Yiwu trader answers all three without hesitation and will take you there.
How buying actually works there
- Minimum quantities are low — often a carton — which makes it the best place in China to build a varied first range.
- Prices are near the floor already and the margin for negotiation is thin. Pushing hard buys you a cheaper component, not a discount.
- Consolidation is the local specialism: dozens of suppliers, one container, one set of documents. This is the real service, and it is worth paying for properly.
- Quality varies far more than in a single-factory relationship, because your carton may come from a different workshop each time. Inspect by sampling across suppliers, not once at the end.
If your range is general merchandise and someone is steering you to Guangdong for all of it, ask why. Sometimes the answer is good. Often it means their network is there and yours should not be.
