People arrive expecting a city of factories and find a city of offices, showrooms and component markets. That is not a disappointment — it is the point. Shenzhen is where products are specified, negotiated and fixed. The making happens across the Pearl River Delta, an hour or two away.
What a useful day looks like
A good first day is not a tour. It has three parts, and the order matters:
- Morning — the market. Walk Huaqiangbei with a specific part in mind. You are calibrating prices and lead times, not buying.
- Midday — the supplier's office. Meet the commercial side where they work, not in a hotel lobby. You learn more from their desk than from a deck.
- Afternoon — the factory. Out to Dongguan or the eastern districts. Budget the travel honestly; it is rarely under an hour.
The mistake that costs the most
Trying to see five suppliers in one day. You will see five lobbies. Two proper visits teach you more than five introductions, because the second half of a visit — after the presentation, when people relax — is where the useful information is.
Hong Kong is an hour away and plays a different role: finance, international contracting, logistics. For a European company the two cities together are often more useful than either alone.
