Suppliers arriving from China often look for « a distributor » as though there were one kind. In France there are several distinct roles, and approaching the wrong one produces polite meetings and no orders — not because the product is wrong, but because you are asking a company to do something it does not do.
The roles, and what each one is paid for
- The importer-distributor. Buys, imports, stocks and resells. Takes the inventory risk and therefore takes a real margin and wants exclusivity. The right partner when your product needs local stock.
- The wholesaler. Sells to retailers or professionals from a catalogue. Wants a product that sells itself; will not build a market for you.
- The commercial agent. Sells in your name for a commission, does not buy the goods. Cheap to start, keeps the customer relationship with you, and carries statutory protections in France that are worth understanding before signing.
- The integrator or specifier. In technical sectors, the company that designs the installation chooses your product without ever being your customer. Reaching them is a different exercise entirely.
The French particularity worth knowing
Retail in France is concentrated: a small number of large groups hold a very large share in most consumer categories. That has two consequences. Getting listed by one of them changes your business overnight, and it is correspondingly slow, demanding and unforgiving about supply reliability. For a first entry, the specialist channel and the professional route are usually more realistic and teach you the market before you need to be flawless.
Before you look for anyone
Decide what margin the chain can carry, because it is not negotiable downstream: a product priced without room for an importer and a retailer simply cannot be sold through them. Working that backwards from the shelf price is the calculation that determines whether a distribution strategy is possible at all.
Ask a prospective partner which of these roles they consider themselves to be, and what they expect you to do. The gap between their answer and your assumption is the whole negotiation.
